Dissertation: Work Placement Route (MMAMGE_99)
Module Tutors: Pam Meecham and John Reeve
Summer Term (full-time students only)

This module aims to provide a structure in which you are supported and informed in your endeavours to:
• develop knowledge and understanding of education practices in an informal context;
• understand the professional skills required to operate effectively in the museum and
  gallery sector;
• broaden the range of skills, including research skills, necessary for entering the
  increasingly professionalised culture of museum and gallery education;
• be able to communicate effectively in written form the outcomes of a research project.

Contemporary issues and practices in museum and gallery education, the wide range of settings, and the dynamic relationship between theory and practice offer you many possibilities to pursue innovative research relevant to your own professional practice. The dissertation and work placement module provides you with a supportive and informative programme of presentations, seminars, student-led presentations, and individual tutorials in which you are encouraged to consider and discuss methodological issues as well as specific content pertaining to the development of your dissertation. In relation to the work placement project/portfolio you will develop and employ skills involving individual responsibility, team-working and problem-solving. You will have first hand experience in assisting with project realisation at varying points and in making comparisons between practice in institutions. In the field of museums and galleries in education you are required to submit a 14,000-word dissertation and a work placement project/portfolio (6,000-word equivalent).
